Dear Rick,
Sometime ago I found a football skull type 'cap' with a small visor. It is maroon and blue in colour with a tassle made of a gold metallic wire. overall condition is very good given its age. On the front of it embroided in yellow are the letters ARL in yellow and superimposed on one another. I'm not sure what order the letters should be in. Below the letters also in yellow is the date 1930. Although I have seen quite a few rugby or rugby league caps I have only ever seen one like this on the net but without any description. Can you tell me what it is? Value is not terribly important, I'd just like to know what it is.
thanks

First, Ben, what is a "visor"? Do you mean a peak? Maybe best to email me a scan of the cap so I can see what you mean. mrpp@iprimus.com.au

Still reckon it might be better to email me a scan of the cap, Ben. I do a sports radio program on 4BC in Brisbane on Thursday nights with Ian Maurice and Peter Psaltis, also Mike Colman from the Courier Mail. They have encyclopedic knowledge on Rugby League. You've almost certainly got a prize here, but I'd like to be sure. Almost certainly Australian Rugby League. Look forward to a scan. By the way, I'm on with these guys from 6.55-7.30pm. We value sporting items on this program. Worth catching! And although it's probably a bit late, we're doing an outside broadcast at the Gabba tonight before the big game against Carlton. We're in the braodcast van just outside gate 2.

Thanks Rick, I listen to the program on 4BC all the time. I will send you a photo soon. I am not sure if it is an ARL cap. I do know that Australia used to play in blue and maroon but I'm not sure when they switched to green and gold. But given the date on the cap and the cost of it at the time I wouldn't imagine it was from just some local or provincial team. I haven't been able to find a photo with of the cap from that time in the rugby league books.

Ben, the amazing thing is that I valued an almost identical QRL cap from 1925 in my column in the Saturday Age just a couple of weeks ago! Like yours, it was in excellent condition. (I ended up seeing it in the flesh) I valued it at $4,000 plus. I can't imagine why an Australian Rugby League cap like yours would have been of similar colour. I'll have to get to the bottom of this, and will ask some well-connected RL people when I get back to Bris. in a couple of weeks. In any case, you have a beauty - worth a simlar amount, or maybe even more because it's ARL rather than QRL.

Thanks Rick, Look forward to hearing from you. The second hand shop I bought it from had it ticketed as an Australian Rugby League cap. I bought it on the off chance that it was and because I knew the Australian League team did wear blue and maroon butcher striped jerseys before the green and gold. It was cheap which made it easier to take a punt on it.

Talked with Peter Psaltis from 4BC Brisbane today. I do Thursday nights sporting valuations with him and Ian Maurice (1116am on the dial, 7-7.30pm) Peter is in Sydney wwith the Qld. team, for tomorrow night's 1st State of Origin clash. Like me, he's sure you've got the real deal. And as I suggested, it's worth plenty more than you paid for it. We both priced it at between $5,000 and $7,500. It's difficult ot be more precise, as one has not previously been offered for sale, so there's no benchmark. Hope this helps. Congrats on your "punt". Itysure paid off!
